Bridges Seoul 2014 - Reza Sarhangi Math2013. 5. 30. 01:36

2. BACKGROUND 배경

Bridging Disciplines and Culture, Bridging the World: During the European Renaissance, art, mathematics, architecture, science, and music flourished side by side. This is no longer the case, and although many artists and scientists are calling for ways to regain the lost mutual understanding, appreciation, and exchange, it has been hard to know how to create environments in which this can happen in a meaningful way.

No less a divide exists between mathematics and the general public. All human beings are fluent in recognizing and appreciating patterns, and are able to deal with the abstractions of language, music, visual art, and theatre effortlessly. Yet most people feel that they have a latent aversion to mathematics and are largely unaware of how deeply embedded it is in the world around them. Still, we have seen over and over again how fascinated and excited people become when mathematical connections are presented in ways which relate to their experiences and trigger their natural curiosities and aesthetic sensibilities.

The International Bridges Conferences, created in 1998 and running annually since, have provided a remarkable model of how these divides can be crossed. Here practicing mathematicians, scientists, artists, educators, musicians, writers, computer scientists, sculptures, dancers, weavers, model builders have come together in a lively and highly charged atmosphere of mutual exchange and encouragement. Important components of these conferences, apart from formal presentations, are gallery displays of visual art, working sessions with practitioners and artists who are crossing the mathematics-arts boundaries, and musical or theatrical events in the evenings. Furthermore, a lasting record of each Bridges Conference is its Proceedings – a beautiful resource book of the papers and the visual presentations of the meeting.

3. THE CONFERENCE EVENTS

The conference will be organized around ten principal features:

(i) The General Sessions: The General Sessions (plenary talks) are designed to introduce new and innovative approaches in mathematical connections in science and art by inviting international scholars and artists as keynote speakers. Besides their presentations, the Proceedings will publish their works in order for participants to study these presentations at a deeper level.

(ii) The Contributed Special Sessions: The conference encourages individuals to participate in the conference by presenting their own works in the Special Sessions. Presenters are requested to submit papers of their new findings or new approaches to the mathematics-art-education nexus. These papers, when accepted by reviewers, will be published in the Proceedings of the conference. Each author has the opportunity to present his or her paper in one of the special sessions, followed by audience comments and questions.

(iii) The Workshop Sessions: Workshop sessions provide opportunities for participants to watch and work hands-on with established contributors who are crossing the mathematics-arts boundaries. Here are opportunities for working with new media and learning new ways to bring the fascination and wonder of mathematics into the classroom. This setting is one that encourages interactive participation.

(iv) Bridges Mathematics and Art Short Movie Festival: More artists and educators than ever are using movies, videos, and animations for different purposes ranging from education, industry, and art. To further the Bridges Organization objectives, there is a new feature of the conference: The Bridges Mathematics and Art Short Movie Festival! It will introduce participants to innovative and integrative techniques that promote interdisciplinary work in the fields of mathematics and art. The year 2010 was the beginning for this new activity. The expectation is that the Festival will grow throughout the years.

(v) The Mathematical Art Exhibition: Every Bridges conference has an accompanying art exhibition which is contributed to from its many artistic participants. The exhibition will be exceptionally attractive, particularly if it is mounted in a prime location, such as the Fine Arts Gallery. During the 2012 Bridges Conference, more than 100 artists exhibited their works at the Mathematical Art Exhibition.

(vi) The Art-in-Progress Exhibit: One of the most interesting features of the conference will be what one might call a show-and-tell space: a space set aside for displaying hands-on things and works in progress. The Bridges conferences are places for people who are actually doing something creative with the mathematics- arts connection to interact with others of the same breed. And what better way to do that than to have a special space for them to show their work and interact on a one- to-one basis! Activities in this regard will also include group assemblies in which many people participate to form geometric sculptures.

(vii) The Theatre Evening: As a part of the Bridges Conferences we propose a one-night theatre show with a theme that connects art with mathematics or science. Examples of previous performances at Bridges Conferences include Arcadia (2000) by Tom Stoppard that was performed at Southwestern College and Picasso at Lapin Agile (2002) by Steve Martin, which was performed at Towson University and directed by Towson theater faculty member Professor Peter Ray. For the 2005 Renaissance Banff, we were pleased to sponsor and host the first reading of a play in progress by New York playwright Ellen Maddow. Delicious Rivers is a play that came out of her extended dialogue with geometer Marjorie Senechal. It is based loosely on the life of the remarkable and eccentric Robert Ammann, a postal worker by trade, but surreptitiously a mathematician who made notable contributions to the theory of aperiodic tiling. In 2009, during the "Theater night", Professor Steve Abbot, the co-editor of the MAA magazine, MATH HORIZONS, and the director of the show, offered attendees a chance to participate by acting or simply enjoying readings from plays. In 2010, The Schaffer and Stern Dance Ensemble performed The Secret Life of Squares as part of the Bridges Pécs 2010 conference; note that Dr. Schaffer is both a mathematics professor and a ballet dancer.

(viii) The Music Event: Music is always a part of every Bridges conference. As one can see from the titles of the pervious proceedings books there are always a large number of contributed sessions given over to the intricacies of music, musical styles, and rhythm with mathematics. The authors of these articles, who most of the times are also music performers, present a night of music and educate the audience about their new findings in performing music and its connections with mathematics. In addition, professional musicians contribute to this event. During Bridges 2010, there was a public performance night of new music. Professor Dmitri Tymoczko of the Princeton University Department of Music lead a concert of accessible music inspired by mathematical themes, featuring composers such as Fernando Benadon, Clifton Callender, Adrian Childs, and Noam Elkies. These new works were presented in a concert performance with an explanatory introduction about their mathematical connections.

(ix) The Korean Math/Art Day: The morning of the 4th day of the conference will be dedicated to the life and legacy of some mathematicians and artists from Korea who crossed disciplines to show connections among discoveries and inventions in different fields of study. There will be general and special talks on this day along with original pieces that perhaps some family members will provide for the conference.

(x) The Family Day: A very important component of the conference will be the presentations of some lectures, workshops, and artworks for the general public and fellow artists. This will be an opportunity for a wider audience to come and see mathematics from a cultural perspective and to visit the conference art exhibition.

One of the most charming events, one that will last almost the entirety of the conference, will be the creation, in situ, of some colorful geometric constructions. In the words of Doris Schattschneider for the 2005 Renaissance Banff, “In the lobby outside the lecture hall, there were always a few children, participants, and spouses seated or kneeling on the floor, busy joining 3720 ZomeTool connector balls to 10680 struts in modules that each hour were added to two growing monster models, 3-D shadows of the 4-D cantellated 600-cell. David Richter and Daniel Duddy orchestrated the project.” It is interesting to know that one of the two models of that event was donated to the Banff Mathematical Research Station where it has a permanent place in the Corbett Hall lounge. A model that was created during the 2006 Bridges Conference in London now has a permanent house in the British Science Museum. In 2009, 1500 fingers, from ages 7 to 70, built a massive sculptural tribute to the late architectural visionary, Jean Christoph Kling, at the Renaissance Bridges 2009 conference in Banff. Five meters in diameter and assembled from 50000 Tinkertoy-like parts, the gossamer model is the largest of its type ever attempted.

Bridges Conference
